Morocco’s dream run in the Women’s World Cup came to an end as they faced a formidable French side in the Round of 16, resulting in a 4-0 defeat and elimination from the tournament.

The African underdogs had been hoping to make history by becoming the first African team to win a knockout match in the Women’s World Cup. However, their aspirations were dashed by a dominant French performance in a match held in Adelaide.

Facing a team that stood 67 places above them in FIFA’s world rankings, Morocco struggled to match the superior quality and skill of their French opponents. France quickly established their control over the match, with goals from Kadidiatou Diani, Kenza Dali, and Eugenie Le Sommer giving them a commanding 3-0 lead by halftime.

Diani’s header in the 20th minute broke the deadlock and set the tone for France’s dominance. Dali’s well-placed shot into the corner extended their lead, leaving Morocco’s defence vulnerable to France’s relentless attacks.

Despite the odds stacked against them, Morocco fought valiantly, with Nesryne El Chad’s clearance inadvertently contributing to France’s advantage. The ball fell kindly to Le Sommer, who capitalised on the opportunity to secure her brace and seal the match at 4-0.
