Borussia Dortmund’s Sporting Director, Sebastian Kehl, has described Otto Addo as an outstanding coach set to depart the team as he prepares to take on a new role with the Black Stars.

The 48-year-old talent coach of the German side was named Ghana’s new coach on Friday, March 15, 2024.

Kehl expressed his admiration for Addo, acknowledging his dedication to both Dortmund and his country.

“We will lose an outstanding coach and a great person in Otto,” said Kehl, highlighting Addo’s special connection to the national team despite his long-standing ties to BVB.

“Nevertheless, I am happy for him and I am sure that he will give his best for BVB until the summer and that we will remain in close contact beyond that,” he added.

In a statement released on the official X account (formerly Twitter), Dortmund bid farewell to Addo, wishing him the best as he embarks on his new journey as coach of the Black Stars.

“We wish him nothing but the best as he embraces this exciting new chapter in his career! Thank you for everything, Otto!” the statement read.

Otto Addo’s appointment will see him return after leading Ghana at the 2022 World Cup.

During his first tenure he managed four wins, four losses and four draws in 12 games and bid farewell to Ghana after failing to lead the country beyond the group stage of the World Cup.

Otto Addo was replaced by then-technical advisor Chris Hughton whose tenure was marred with disappointments. The Irish-Ghanaian gaffer was relieved of his duties by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) after a dismal performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Otto Addo’s appointment according to the GFA was influenced by his ‘exceptional performance during the interview process.

He will officially take charge in May when his 34-month contract begins with an option to extend for an additional 24 months.

His first competitive games will be against Mali and the Central African Republic in June when the 2026 World Cup qualifiers resume.
