Dreams FC coach Karim Zito has expressed dissatisfaction with the state of officiating in the Ghana Premier League, citing it as one of the factors contributing to their struggles domestically, despite their stunning performance in Africa.

Dreams FC have reached the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup and are gearing up for the first leg against Zamalek on Sunday, April 21, 2024, in Cairo.

This fixture holds immense significance for the club, considering their journey from the initial rounds to topping their group and eliminating Stade Malien in the quarter-finals.

Their remarkable run in Africa has contrasted sharply with their league form, which was lacklustre until their recent 2-0 victory over Asante Kotoko lifted them out of the relegation zone.

Zito highlighted the challenges of fatigue and pressure associated with juggling league matches and continental commitments. He also criticised the poor officiating standards in the league, contrasting them with the better conditions in Africa where pitches are in good condition and officiating is of a higher standard.

“There is tiredness and pressure in playing league matches, as well as the Confederation Cup. Travelling is very difficult and we have to travel on Sundays for a match and Wednesdays for midweek games, as well as travelling to play in Africa. It puts a lot of pressure on the boys,” he told Graphic Sports.

“Officiating is very bad in the league and it is one of the reasons we are not doing well in the league but in Africa pitches are good and officiating is equally good and that is why we are doing well there,” he added.

Despite their league struggles, Dreams FC is now focused on their upcoming semi-finals clash against Zamalek. Their priority is securing a positive result in the first leg before returning to Kumasi for the return leg on Sunday, April 28.

The team is determined to maintain their momentum in continental competition while also striving for a respectable finish in the domestic league, with two outstanding games left to play.
