Medeama SC have been eliminated from the CAF Champions League after Young Africans defeated CR Belouizdad 4-0 in Tanzania.

The Ghanaian champions had hoped that the game would not produce a winner, which would have kept them in contention for qualification to the knockout stage.

However, Young Africans proved too strong for Belouizdad, securing a massive win that puts them on eight points, just one point behind group leaders Al Ahly.

The win means that Medeama, who have four points, can’t qualify even if they win their last match against CR Belouizdad convincingly in Algeria.

Belouizdad are also effectively out of the competition since Young Africans now have a superior head-to-head record. Even if Belouizdad win their remaining match and finish on eight points, Young Africans will qualify due to their 4-3 aggregate victory over two legs.

Medeama’s failure to progress to the knockout stage is a result of their own mistakes, as they had several chances to beat the African champions Al Ahly in Kumasi on Friday but were unable to convert them.

Credit must also be given to the opposition goalkeeper, Mostafa Shobeir, who made several incredible saves to deny the home side victory.
