Liverpool are reportedly exploring alternative options to replace manager Jurgen Klopp, as speculation surrounding Xabi Alonso’s potential return to Anfield fades.

While Alonso, currently at Bayer Leverkusen, had been heavily linked with the managerial role at Liverpool following Klopp’s announcement of stepping down, recent developments suggest the Spaniard may remain with Leverkusen amidst their remarkable season.

Leverkusen is on the cusp of clinching their first Bundesliga title and remains unbeaten in all competitions this season, making Alonso’s departure seem less likely. Bayern Munich’s honorary president, Uli Hoeness, even deemed a move for Alonso this summer “probably impossible.”

Hoeness remarked, “[Alonso] is more inclined to stay at Bayer Leverkusen in view of their current successes, because he would not want to leave them behind.”

Alonso, a revered figure from his playing days at Liverpool, has transitioned into coaching after retiring from professional football. His coaching journey, which began with Real Madrid’s youth teams, eventually led him to Bayer Leverkusen in 2022.

Under Alonso’s leadership, Leverkusen has experienced a resurgence, currently sitting comfortably at the top of the Bundesliga table and progressing in other competitions.

While Liverpool had initially eyed Alonso as a potential candidate for the managerial position, they are now exploring other options. Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim and Brighton’s Roberto de Zerbi have emerged as potential contenders for the role.

As Liverpool evaluates its managerial options, Alonso’s success at Leverkusen underscores the challenges of luring him away from a thriving project.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding Klopp’s successor, The Reds remains focused on securing a capable leader to guide the club forward.
