English-born Ghanaian youngster Kobbie Mainoo has received a call-up to the England senior squad, marking a milestone in his burgeoning career.

Mainoo, who had previously been part of the England Under-21 setup, has been elevated to Gareth Southgate’s squad for the March friendlies against football powerhouses Brazil and Belgium.

The 18-year-old’s inclusion comes on the heels of an impressive display in Manchester United’s epic 4-3 FA Cup quarter-final victory over Liverpool.

The late addition of Mainoo to the senior group underscores the recognition of his talent and potential by the England coaching staff.

Gareth Southgate, the England manager, had previously commended Mainoo’s progress, acknowledging his skill and character as he navigates his early career stages.

“I think Kobbie is doing brilliantly for a young player,” remarked Southgate. “He’s not at the point in terms of number of games that Jude [Bellingham] or Bukayo [Saka] were when they first came in, but I repeat – he’s doing really well, he’s a good footballer, you can see that, and he’s getting some fabulous experience with Man Utd and looks a good character.”

While Mainoo’s call-up to the England senior squad is a testament to his talent and hard work, it represents a significant setback for Ghana, who had expressed interest in securing his allegiance to represent the nation of his parentage.

Randy Abbey, a member of the executive council of the Association, conveyed Ghana’s desire to collaborate with talented players like him, both domestically and internationally.

“The association would love to work with him and many like him at home and abroad.”
