Black Princesses captain Afi Amenyeku has tenderly presented her African Games Women’s football gold medal to her grandfather, acknowledging his unwavering support as a key factor in her success.

Amenyeku, who led the team as goalkeeper, played a pivotal role in securing Ghana’s gold medal victory over Nigeria in the 2023 African Games. Her impressive performance throughout the tournament, featuring in all five games, culminated in the historic win at the Cape Coast Stadium.

Explaining her gesture to Akoma FM, Amenyeku expressed the profound bond between her and her grandfather, highlighting his dreams of witnessing her achievements in football.

She recounted his prayers and aspirations for her success, underscoring his influence on her career.

“When my grandfather learned that I played football, he told me he dreamed of seeing me succeed. He also always asks for cars and other things before he passes away, so I always remember this.

Driven by her desire to fulfill her grandfather’s wishes and make him proud, Amenyeku expressed her determination to continue striving for excellence in her football career.

“My grandfather is someone I will never forget, and I hope to continue making him proud of my football career,” she added, with heartfelt sincerity.

The goalkeeper also played a crucial role in Ghana’s victory over Nigeria in the inaugural WAFU B U-20 Girls’ Cup held in Kumasi last year. With this achievement behind them, the Black Princesses are now gearing up for the forthcoming U-20 Women’s World Cup.

The gold medal triumph didn’t only mark a significant milestone for Amenyeku and her teammates but also contributed to Ghana’s record-breaking medal haul at the African Games as the hosts clinched 69 medals including 19 gold, 29 silver and 21 bronze.
