In a gripping encounter at the ongoing AFCON 2023 , Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman proved to be the hero for Nigeria as they clinched the first semifinal spot with a hard-fought victory over Angola.

Facing a tough test against Angola, the Super Eagles showcased their defensive prowess, emerging victorious with an impressive performance.

The match kicked off with Angola’s Mabululu attempting to shock Nigeria in the fifth minute, but the goalkeeper made a comfortable save.

Nigeria took the lead in the 41st minute when Moses Simon provided Ademola Lookman with a precision pass inside the box. Lookman finished with a precise effort under the bar.

Victor Osimhen managed to win himself just enough space inside the box to meet a free kick and powered a perfectly placed header inside the right post.

However, celebrations were short-lived as Victor Osimhen’s stunning goal was ruled out after a VAR review showed it was offside.

Despite the setback, the Super Eagles maintained their composure and held off the threats posed by the Palancas Negras to secure a spot in the semifinals.

The team will now face the winner between Cape Verde and South Africa, whose fate will be decided in Saturday night’s clash.

Nigeria, three-time African champions, are determined to clinch their fourth AFCON title, having last lifted the trophy 11 years ago.

With Ademola Lookman’s stellar performance, the Super Eagles are poised for a thrilling semifinal showdown as they continue their quest for continental glory.
