Black Stars coach Chris Hughton has revealed that Mohammed Kudus would need to be assessed ahead of Egypt’s clash despite training with the team in the last few days.

The West Ham United star is believed to be recovering well after sustaining an injury while on duty in the Premier League prompting the club to accompany him with a physiotherapist to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The 23-year-old was absent in Ghana’s first game against Cape Verde resulting in a 2-1 defeat on Sunday.

While Kudus’ absence was felt particularly in the attacking third of the Black Stars, hopes heightened to see his return to the team as he was spotted training diligently. However, there is still no assurance of his fitness as Hughton highlights the importance of not taking risks.

“We will continue to assess Mohammed Kudus,” Hughton said ahead of the team’s game against Egypt.

“He has trained the last few days. We will assess him today and tomorrow and make a decision tomorrow.”

Ahead of the crucial clash with the Pharaohs, the gaffer acknowledged the importance of improving upon their performance.

“Our level has to be higher. On paper, we’re playing a better side [Egypt].”

While Ghana hope to turn things around against the record holders of the AFCON, Egypt will also be aiming at getting their first win having drawn with Mozambique in the first game.
