Interim Nigeria coach Augustine Eguavoen is leaving his role following the Super Eagles’ painful exit from the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday, January 23.
Despite winning all their group games, the three-time African champions lost 0-1 to Tunisia in the second Round of 16 game.
Their situation was worsened in Sunday’s game after substitute Alex Iwobi was red-carded a few minutes after coming on in the second half.
In his post-match interview, Eguavoen, a member of the 1994-winning squad, said he will go back to his official position as the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
“What happens next is that I’m the interim coach and Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF),” Eguavoen said.
“I will go back to my position and allow the NFF (to) make a decision on the way forward.”
Nigeria appointed Eguavoen as interim coach of the Super Eagles after parting ways with German Gernot Rohr just weeks before the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
The NFF is expected to appoint a new manager ahead of the double-header 2022 World Cup playoffs with Ghana in March.
