Former Netherlands goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has provided a positive update on his health, revealing that he has been moved out of the intensive care unit following a brain bleed.

The 52-year-old, who had a successful career with Manchester United and Ajax, was taken to hospital while on vacation in Croatia before being transferred to a Dutch hospital.

In a statement shared on his Twitter account, Van der Sar expressed his relief at no longer being in the intensive care unit.

However, he remains in the hospital for further treatment and recovery. He hopes to be discharged and continue his rehabilitation at home in the coming week.

The news of Van der Sar’s condition on July 7 prompted an outpouring of support from fans and well-wishers. In his latest update, he expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming messages of encouragement.

“We want to thank everyone for all the great and supportive messages,” Van der Sar stated.

Van der Sar, who earned 130 caps for the Netherlands national team, stepped down from his position as Ajax chief executive in May.

Having retired from playing in 2011 after his stint with Manchester United, Van der Sar joined the Ajax board in 2012 before assuming the role of chief executive in 2016.
