Former Ghana international Harrison Afful has penned a contract extension that will see him be in action for Major League Soccer (MLS) club Charlotte FC for 2023 and an option for the club to keep him for a further year.

The club extended the former Asante Kotoko defender’s stay following his impressive display since joining last year and will be given the opportunity to work in the scouting department as well.

The 36-year-old was a key figure at his former club, Columbus Crew, but he left after his contract expired after 164 league appearances.

He joined Charlotte FC on a one-year deal in December 2021 as a free agent, and after 21 games, the club believes his experience will benefit other aspects of their game, both on and off the field, thereby extending his stay.

“Beyond his impact on the field, he is a person of tremendous character and football knowledge. We are thrilled he will be spending his time off the pitch with Thomas, Lisandro, and our excellent scouting department to set the foundations of what is sure to be an excellent career off the pitch once his playing days are done,” said Sporting Director Zoran Krneta.

Harrison Afful has been playing in the MLS since 2015 after winning several honours with Tunisian giants Espérance de Tunis and Ghana’s Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

He has also been an integral member of the Black Stars since 2008 helping the team win silver at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
