Ghanaian long jumper Deborah Acquah revealed that her goal for the 2022 Commonwealth Games was a silver medal, but she is happy with her bronze.
Acquah is one of five Ghanaian athletes who won medals at the recently concluded Games.
She took bronze in the women’s long jump with a leap of 6.94m in the final, trailing only Australia’s Brooke Buschkuehl (silver) and Nigeria’s Ese Brume, who won gold with a leap of 6.99m.
Acquah had to put a difficult trip behind her, arriving in Birmingham only 48 hours before her first outing. She impressively advanced to the final, where she made history by becoming the first Ghanaian to win a Commonwealth Games long jump medal.
Acquah and the other medalists returned home earlier this week and were greeted warmly by Ghanaians.
Speaking on Tv3’s Warm Up+ Acquah said, “It’s a good feeling knowing that I’m the best jumper in Ghana even though sometimes I wish we had other jumpers to create a competition.”
“There’s always someone who is better than the other and I knew Ese Brume from Nigeria was very good and the one that came second was also very good. I wasn’t really expecting them to beat me but Ese Brume is a really good fighter so even if I wasn’t thinking of winning gold, I was thinking of silver.”
The 26-year-old failed to make the final of the women’s long jump at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon in July.
“I felt bad about my performance at the World Championships. I was so nervous going into the competition. Even the night before the competition I didn’t sleep, not even one hour,” She explained.
