Young boxer Joseph Commey has confirmed that he was unable to compete for gold at the recently concluded 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham due to illness.

Commey had to settle for a silver medal after missing the featherweight division final. He was supposed to compete against Northern Ireland’s Jude Gallagher, who was declared the winner and took home the gold medal.

“I was going to the finals when I was struck with the illness. I had both malaria and a boil under my armpit. After the checkup I was told by the doctor that I couldn’t fight though I insisted on fighting,” Commey told the press.

”Anything could have happened if I had fought, so we give glory to God in all things. Maybe next time I might win gold or maybe the Olympics games I might win gold,” he added.

Commey had an incredible run to the final, recording two consecutive victories before beating New Zealand’s Alex Maduka in the quarterfinals and India’s Muhammad Husammudin in the semis.

Ghana won five medals at the Games.
