Commonwealth Games: How Ghana fared on Day 5

Sprinters Martin Owusu Antwi and Janet Amponsah all failed to make it to the final of the men and women’s 200m races respectively. Owusu-Antwi who ran a season best of 21.02 in the quarter final could not replicate that same form in the semis, finishing 8th in a disappointing time of 25.95 seconds. Amponsah on the other hand, is one of Ghana’s top sprinters. With Commonwealth Games and Olympics experience, expectation was that she could thrill in Gold Coast. But her time of 23.67 seconds in the semi final of the Women’s 100m was not enough to get her through. In Badminton, Emmanuel Donkor put up a brave fight but ultimately lost in two straight close sets against Sri Lankan Buwenaka Goonethileka. There was better news for Donkor in the men’s double when he partnered Sam Daniel to beat the South African pair of Daniel Coetzer and Prakash Vikiyanash by two sets to one. Donkor then partnered Stella Amassah to progress to the round of sixteen in the mixed doubles against Jessica Li and Benjamin Li of Isle of Man. The story was different for the women hockey team who continued to ship goals instead of gold in Gold Coast. They let in five in their against Canada on Wednesday but scored for the first time.
