Chris Smalling has extended his stay at Italian club Roma by signing a new two-year contract.

Smalling, 33, initially joined Roma on a season-long loan from Manchester United in 2019 before making the move permanent in 2020. His previous contract with the Stadio Olimpico outfit was set to expire next month.

Expressing his delight at the new deal, Smalling said, “I’m playing the best football of my career here and my family and I have felt so welcome in this wonderful city from day one. What’s more, this club is clearly taking great strides forward in all areas. Choosing to remain at Roma was an easy decision to make.”

Since joining Roma, Smalling has made 143 appearances across all competitions and scored 10 goals. He has become a vital player for the Giallorossi under the guidance of head coach Jose Mourinho, and together they clinched the inaugural Europa Conference League title in 2022.

Prior to his time in Italy, the former England defender had stints with non-league side Maidstone United before joining Fulham in June 2008. In January 2010, he moved to Old Trafford, where he enjoyed success, winning two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, League Cup, and the Europa League.
