Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses on Friday beat Mali’s Female Eagles 4-2 to win Bronze in the 2018 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations. The third-place play-off, which came off at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium, also served as the final qualification game for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. By their win, Cameroon, therefore, secure the final ticket for the tournament to be held in France. Cameroon went 2-0 up in the first half courtesy Ninon Abena’s brace. But the Malians pulled one back before the break to keep the score just as how their group phase meeting ended. The Malians had taken the lead in that game but the Lionesses rallied to win 2-1. An own goal a few minutes into the second half on Friday’s play-off gave the Malians a glimmer of hope as they drew level. But their goalkeeper failed them on two occasions as she was beaten by two long-range shots. The first was from Gabrielle Onguene and the second, from a set piece by captain Christine Manie, who shot about 30 yards into Adoudou Konate’s goal. It was joy for the Cameroonians as they join Nigeria and South Africa for next year’s world cup. But the defending champions would have to scale past South Africa on Saturday in order to retain their trophy.
