The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has mourned the passing of its doping officer, Dr Joseph Kabungo, in Abuja, Nigeria on Tuesday, March 29.

Dr Kabungo lost his life while on official duty during the Nigeria-Ghana World Cup qualifier.

He was on duty as a FIFA Doping Officer.

A statement by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) said Dr Kabungo was found “gasping for breath near the dressing room of the Ghanaian team” while on his way to find a Ghana player for a doping test.

Initial reports said Dr Kabungo died after he was attacked by irate fans, who invaded the pitch after the game over failure of the Super Eagles to qualify for the global showpiece.

“CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe and the CAF family conveys deepest condolences to the family of Dr Kabungo and Football Association Zambia (FAZ),” a statement by CAF on Wednesday, March 30 said.
