Abubakar Kamoko, son of retired Ghanaian boxer Bukom Banku, has secured a medal for Ghana at the ongoing 2023 African Games.

Competing in the 86kg cruiserweight category, Kamoko secured his place in the semifinals by defeating his opponent with a stellar performance.

Following in the footsteps of his father, who secured a bronze medal at the 1999 African Games in South Africa, Kamoko has already ensured himself at least a bronze.

However, with the potential to progress further, Kamoko aims to elevate his achievement to silver or gold by winning his subsequent bouts.

Kamoko’s success adds to the promising performance of Ghana’s boxing team at the Games. Other boxers including Janet Acquah (Minimum weight -48Kg), Mohammed Aryeetey (Minimumweight -48Kg), and Theophilus Kpakpo Allotey (Flyweight -51kg), have all reached the semifinals in their respective categories and are guaranteed medals as well.

While six other Ghanaian boxers are still vying for a medal, including Amadu Mohammed (Bantamweight -54Kg) and Samuel Takyi (Light Welterweight -63.5Kg), some athletes, unfortunately, couldn’t advance to the next stage.

In other disciplines Ghana’s Armwrestling team had excelled over the weekend, securing an impressive 41 medals and propelling the country to sixth place on the overall table.
