Joseph Commey, a 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medalist, is the latest Ghanaian boxer to enter the medal zone.

The 20-year-old defeated Malian opponent Daouuda Sidibe in the men’s 60kg quarter-finals on Monday night. His amateur boxing teammates Abdul Omar, Daniel Plange and Henry Malm lost their bouts on the same night.

Commey is the fifth Ghanaian boxer to reach the medal zone after Theophilus Allotey, Abubakar Kamoko, Mohammed Aryeetey and Janet Acquah booked places in earlier bouts.

“It has been a long time since Ghana won a gold medal in boxing at the African Games so we are determined,” head coach of the Black Bombers, Ofori Asare told 3Sports.

“It is good that we have majority of our boxers in the medal zone now. The next step is to climb to silver (the finals) and then we will look for gold,” he added.

Flyweight Steven Dotse Ahialey was the last Ghanaian boxer to win gold in boxing at the African Games in Cairo in 1991 after scoring a unanimous points decision against Anicet Rasonnaivo of Madagascar in the final of the 48kg class.

Amadu Mohammed and 2020 Olympic Games medalist Samuel Takyi will fight in the next few days for possible places in the medal zone.
