Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif says they had the 2022 World Cup in mind before choosing Doha as the camping venue for the Black Stars ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

Black Stars camped in Qatar, where the 2022 World Cup would be staged later this year, for three weeks before travelling to Cameroon for the Afcon.

But Black Stars were woeful and exited the Afcon at the group stage for the first time since 2006.

The team’s shock early exit was discussed in Parliament, where the Minister explained the Qatar decision.

He said, “The ministry and the GFA agreed to camp in Doha because the Black Stars have the opportunity to qualify for the World Cup and we are going to play Nigeria.

“If we get the opportunity to qualify then it’s only important the players acclimatize.”

Before the Afcon, Ghana had achieved qualification to the final round of the World Cup qualifiers.

They have been drawn against Nigeria in a two-legged tie in late March with the winner qualifying to the World Cup.
