Black Meteors head coach Ibrahim Tanko together with his two assistant coaches Godwin Attram and Michael Osei have been relieved of their duties with the team following their exit from the ongoing U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Tanko who was in charge of the team four years ago was entrusted with the task of making the top three of the 2023 edition of the AFCON in order to get a place in the next Olympic Games.

However, the team failed once more exiting from the group phase after failing to win their final group match against Guinea.

In an interview with 3Sports on Sports Ultras, the Chairman of the Management Committee of the team, Frederick Acheampong stated that their mandate came to an end as soon as they got eliminated on Friday.

According to him, the technical team, as well as the playing body and officials, currently are not recognised as such. However, whether or not they resume will be decided by the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council.

“This team was put together for the purpose of qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and we failed to qualify so obviously, it will be dissolved,” he told 3Sports.

“If it happens that Executive Council will discuss and consider another appointment or want the coach to continue, that will be in the powers of the Executive Council. I am not in the position to say whether they will continue or not because I don’t make the appointment in terms of the national teams. It is the decision of the Executive Council.

“The team stands dissolved because we failed to qualify for the Olympic Games and we don’t have any tournaments coming up next year,” he added.

Ghana’s exit means that their dream of returning to the Olympic Games after their last visit in 2004 would have to wait at least four years longer.
