William Amponsah has etched his name in the annals of sporting glory by securing Ghana’s first-ever marathon medal at the 2023 African Games.

The long-distance runner clinched the silver medal with an impressive time of 1:05:13s in the Men’s Half Marathon Final held on Friday morning, March 22, 2024, at the University of Ghana Stadium.

Amponsah’s remarkable feat saw him finish second behind Eritrea’s Samsom Amare Hailemicael, showcasing his exceptional endurance and determination on the track.

This achievement marks Ghana’s fourth medal in athletics, adding to the silver and bronze medals claimed by the 4x100m relay teams and Rose Yeboah’s gold in the Women’s High Jump event.

Amponsah’s journey to podium success has been one of perseverance and dedication, underscored by his previous impressive performance in the Men’s 10,000m final, where he set a national record with a fifth-place finish in 29:50.99.
