The Deputy CEO of AshantiGold, Albert Commey, has rendered an apology for making some match-fixing allegations at multiple Ghana Premier League teams.
Commey on Tuesday accused his own club, Hearts of Oak, Real Tamale King Faisal, Legon Cities and others of match manipulation on the final weekend of the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season.
“The Ghana Premier League was competitive but [I] wasn’t happy with the final day because there were lots of fixed games. RTU never won any match away. AshGold v Bibiani Gold Stars was fixed. Wonders v Aduana was fixed. King Faisal vs Legon Cities was fixed,” he told Sunyani-based Space FM.
“Normally when it gets to that time, clubs want to survive. FA doesn’t know about it. How do you think Hearts of Oak will lose by four goals? Did you watch them yesterday? We shouldn’t be hypocrites or we won’t progress. I’m a Hearts fan, I’m telling you.”
The Ghana Football Association invited him to assist with investigations on Tuesday.
However, on Thursday, he issued an apology letter in which he apologised for those remarks and retracted what he said in the interview.
“I have realized that the interview I granted to Space FM in Sunyani recently has generated a lot of controversy among the football fraternity, especially the clubs whose names I mentioned in the said interview”, Commey said in a statement.
“I apologize unreservedly to the Ghana Football Association for making such unpleasant comments and hereby retract anything I said in the interview. I must admit that I have been unwell for the past three months.”
