David Alaba’s unstoppable drive just after the half-hour mark inspired Real Madrid to a fourth successive El Clasico victory over Barcelona.

Barcelona should have been in front at this point as Serginho Dent blazed over the bar after Memphis Depay’s low cross arrived to him in space eight yards out.

Shortly after Alaba’s opener, Gerard Pique was gifted a free header from Depay’s corner but his effort flew agonisingly wide of the far post.

The Azulgrana missed many chances at drawing level with a Dent shot from outside the area and a late header from Sergio Aguero, both flying a yard wide of the goal frame.

Lucas Vazquez netted a stoppage-time second for the visitors before Aguero finally got the hosts on the scoresheet seven minutes into added time but it was too little, too late.

The win puts Real Madrid top of the table while Barcelona are eighth.
