President Nana Akufo-Addo congratulated the Black Stars on qualifying for the 2022 World Cup at the expense of Nigeria.

Akufo-Addo, who celebrated his 78th birthday on the same day Ghana qualified, stated he was proud of the four-time African champions.

“Warm congratulations to the Senior National Football Team, the Black Stars, for their dogged display in Abuja, and qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

“I am very proud of the team’s exploits. They have made the entire nation proud,” the President tweeted.

An early goal from Thomas Partey was enough to secure Ghana’s place at the 2022 Qatar World Cup as they beat Nigeria on away goals after a 1-1 draw in the second leg of their qualifying play-off.

William Troost-Ekong’s penalty was not enough to stop the Black Stars from recording a famous result on enemy territory.

After failing to qualify for the 2018 edition in Russia, the Black Stars have returned to the global showpiece.

Ghana had previously qualified for three consecutive World Cups between 2006 and 2014.

Ghana’s finest World Cup performance came in 2010 when the squad made it to the quarterfinals.

They will attempt to break that record in November when they travel to Qatar.
