The first ever Kumasi marathon, dubbed Verna Marathon, being championed by Akoma FM has officially been launched.

The event is expected to attract over 3,000 athletes from all the 16 regions of the country.

The 21-kilometer race is set to take place on Saturday, October 1 and would see thousands of athletes from across Ghana compete for the ultimate prize.

The race is part of activities lined up by the Akoma FM 87.9 MHz in Kumasi to promote public engagement.

The marathon is expected to attract athletes from stakeholders including 150 senior high schools in the Ashanti Region.

The starting point is at Kumasi City Mall through Suame Roundabout, Airport Roundabout, Santasi Roundabout, Ahodwo Roundabout and will end at the Kumasi City Mall.

The Regional Station Manager, Mathias Owusu Asante, noted that there are various packages for the winners and participants.

He revealed that special prizes will be given the ten top athletes in both men and women categories.

“We are delighted to begin this marathon, which is the first of its kind,” he said.

“We urge all to partake to make the race successful. We thank our sponsors for believing in our brand and we are hopeful of delivering a superb Marathon come 1st October,” he added.

The Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Patience Mensah, underscored the need for all to exercise.

She said exercising is really good and expects all to take part in the Marathon.

“Report we are getting from health facilities is that we are not exercising. It is good for us as a country to create a time for us to exercise. All that we need to do is to take opportunity to be part of the Marathon,” she stressed.
