Ghanaian swimmer Abeiku Jackson has missed out on the men’s 100m butterfly semi-finals after clocking 53.39sec in the heats on Thursday morning.

The 21-year-old’s time placed him first in Heat 2, but unfortunately could not secure qualification to the next round as he exited the Olympic Games.

51. 74sec is the slowest time among the 16 qualified swimmers.

He can, however, be proud of setting a new national record.

Jackson, who also specializes in the 50m freestyle, said before his event that he was expecting a good start as he hoped to clinch a medal.

“I have prepared very well and want to start on a bright note and advance to the next stage.”

“I am motivated to do well, and winning an Olympic medal in Tokyo would be historic,” he told Xinhua.

Abeiku competed for Ghana at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and holds the national records in over 10 disciplines.

He also became the first Ghanaian swimmer to compete at the Olympics when he represented the country at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
