Chris Hughton has named a 25-man squad to face Madagascar and Comoros in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with captain Andre Ayew making a return having missed out on the previous squad.
Ayew was omitted from the previous call-up as Ghana succumbed to 2-0 and 4-0 defeats to Mexico and the United States respectively in their international friendly clashes.
During Ayew’s absence, Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey took charge as captain but will unfortunately be an absentee for the task ahead due to an injury that was sustained during his time with the Gunners.
The 30-year-old could be sidelined until December according to reports from London and Majeed Ashimeru is expected to fill in the gap.
Hibernian goalkeeper Joseph Wollacot has made a return t the team as well having suffered a series of injuries in the last one year with the initial one ruling him out of the 2022 World Cup.
The squad also features the return of Kamaldeen Sulemana who made a swift return from injury after missing the previous assignment.
While a fracture keeps Alexander Djiku out Daniel Amartey and Medeama SC forward Jonathan Sowah have also made a return to the team with Baba Abdul Rahman failing to make the squad despite his recent impressive performances for POAK in the Greek league.
Ghana will host Madagascar at the Baba Yara Stadium on November 17, in their first game of the qualifiers having last drawn goalless with the same opponents when they last squared off in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Comoros, on the other hand, appear as a direct foe and a target for revenge for the Black Stars who experienced arguably their worst performance at an AFCON competition when they succumbed to a terrible 3-2 defeat to the Coelacanths in their final group game ending their dreams of qualifying to the next stage of the competition. The two will lock horns after in Moroni on Tuesday, November 21, 2023.
Meanwhile, Hughton is under pressure to manage positive results to save his job given the atrocious performance of the team in recent times.
