Amerado’s road manager, Kwao Lezzes, has added his voice to protesters as Grammy announced that Afrobeat is a blend of West African and Black-American sounds.
Kwao Lezzes, who has been in the music industry for years, was surprised that the narrative of West African culture is being told differently from what is known. He questioned whether the error is a result of others telling the African story instead of Africans.
“Share your thoughts. The #Grammys is claiming #Afrobeats as a Black American Music. Should we allow the Non-African media to tell the Afrobeat story??”
Via their official Twitter handle, Grammy shared an article intending to celebrate the music genre. Unfortunately, the caption accompanying the tweet raised concerns as the Recording Academy had attributed the genre to Black-American history.
The original tweet from the Recording Academy has been edited to exclude the ‘Black-American’ mention after several calls outs on Twitter.
Many Africans and music experts sought to correct the error, which has sparked a conversation about Africans actively participating in the documentation of their culture.
