Yes, some mothers too can rap – possibly better than some mainstream acts – and if you don’t believe it ask the many who watched Madam Deborah Etadot-Doste perform live on TV3.

Madam Etadot-Doste was among some talented mums who took the stage to show off some impressive skills during TV3’s Mama’s Got Talent reality show.

Ghana’s number one television station – TV3 – organised the reality show on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10, a day set aside to celebrate mothers.

Mother’s Day is a celebration honouring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.

The day is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world.

From thousands of entries, four mums – Mercy Agbleke, Deborah Etadot-Dotse, Doris Laryea and Selina Hayibor, were selected for the live show Sunday.

Before the competition kicked off proper, the show, hosted by MzGee, got off with a performance from Bennada of TV3 Mentor Reloaded fame. She performed ‘Have I Told You Lately That I Love You’ by Rod Stewart and the popular ‘Sweet Mother’ song.

Gospel musician Empress Gifty (Gifty Adorye), mother of 4, was a guest judge for the reality show. But before she starts that work, the musician and her mother put up an impressive stage performance.

“… [She] is a gift from God so she is so precious to me…” Empress Gifty’s mother said about her daughter.

When the competition kicked off, Madam Doris Laryea came on stage to sing and play the keyboard.

According to her, she learnt how to play the keyboard 26 years ago and her kids recorded her while she was playing during this lockdown period.

Selina Hayibor, who said she didn’t know her kids submitted her video for the competition, showed off some impressive dance skills. “I loved everything about you. Your energy,” said about her performance.

Madam Mercy Agbleke played the bass guitar. She learnt how to play the bass guitar some 32 years ago. “You did great. It’s so difficult to learn this instrument,” Empress Gifty said about her performance but also noted that her only problem was how Madam Agbleke switched the keys.

Madam Deborah Etadot-Dotse rapped. She performed Fugees’ ‘Ready or Not’. She laced it with Chaka Demus & Pliers’ ‘Murder She Wrote’.

“I salute you. Mama Got Talent!” Empress Gifty said after that impressive performance.

After a classic performance from Mr Drew, who did his smash hit song ‘Dw3’, which happens to be his mum’s favourite, it was time to collate the votes. Viewers voted through phone calls and on social media.

After the votes, Empress Gifty disclosed that her favourite was Deborah Etadot-Dotse. She was also the favourite of the many who voted too.

She went home with one big hamper, two GTP clothes, GHc100 worth of AirtelTigo airtime.

Doris Laryea emerged second. For her prize, she received one big hamper, two GTP clothes, GHc50 worth of AirtelTigo airtime.

Mercy Agbleke and Selina Hayibor took the third and fourth positions. Each won one big hamper, one GTP cloth, GHc50 worth of AirtelTigo airtime.
