Ghanaian musician, Shasha Marley, has opened up about his disinterest in associating with political parties particularly by composing campaign songs.

Shasha Marley disclosed how he rejected an offer of $50,000 to compose a song for a political party.

He revealed this to Abeiku Santana on his recent episode of his Atuu show indicating that the deal came just this year although he did not disclose which political party it was.

He said he was kept awake all night and could not sleep after an old friend who was not a politician called to inform him about the deal.

“You will be amazed and surprise to know that I have rejected a $50,000 offer from a political party to do a reggae song for them to use their message to pass on.

“I had a call from a very old friend who is not a politician and told me he had a good deal for me. That night I could not sleep so the following day I visited him at his office and after a long conversation he told me about the deal,” Shasha explained to Abeiku.

According to him, he initially accepted to record the reggae song for $6000 but later refused the offer after a second thought with his wife who advised him against taking money from politicians.

“I accepted to do a reggae song for $50,000 for them to pass their message on. The recording of the song was $6000 but when I left on my way home, I was really thinking about it.

“So, when I got home, my wife asked me about the deal because I has already informed her. I told her the deal was about politics and she advised me against it and eventually I rejected the offer. I can’t put my career on the line,” he stated.

Composing songs for political parties is not a new phenomenon. During election years, political parties enlist some musicians to compose campaign songs to aid them win elections.

Although, many people have spoken against this act, it is still occurring. Gospel artiste, Diana Asamoah recently disclosed that she has a campaign song for the New Patriotic Party.

Other artistes like Nacee, Sarkodie and Samini have all in the past produced campaign songs for political parties.
