Yaw Tog’s interview with Mz Gee on TV3 Newday had Twitter up in arms yesterday (8th July) over his comments that ‘he made Stormzy more popular in Ghana’. He said, “He made me more popular in this market. And I made him more popular here too. Because people didn’t know Stormzy in Ghana. So, I think we both did magic to ourselves. Magic to our brands.
This comment incensed several music enthusiasts who called him arrogant and disrespectful for daring to put himself out as Stormzy’s equal in the industry. Radio Presenter Sammy Forson described the utterance as “selfish behaviour in the industry”. He tweeted, “Yaw Tog’s comments about making Stomzy popular in GH are the kind that unfortunately encourages selfish behaviour in the industry… If u know what it takes to be a mainstream artist in the UK and playlisted into other parts of Europe, you won’t lose talk… Smh… Focus on your music.”
Although others felt the statement was in right standing because Stormzy is a foreign artiste. Most were appalled by the bold assertion Yaw Tog made. Hopefully, his response would go a long way to calm nerves and keep the vibe rolling.
