For acclaimed Ghanaian rapper, Sarkodie, the journey to stardom saw him trying to find his path through diverse passions and talents.
Though he reigns as one of Africa’s most influential musicians today, Sarkodie’s trajectory began with ambitions that veered far from the world of melodies and beats.
In a revealing interview with the Music website, NandoLeaks on their podcast, Sarkodie shared a side of himself that many of his fans might not know.
Born Micheal Owusu-Addo, the ‘Money No Be Problem’ rapper revealed that his love for the sciences fuelled his ambition to be a doctor while growing up.
“First, I wanted to be a doctor, I do arts; I paint, I sketch. So definitely something towards that direction…” he said on the podcast.
However, life has a way of steering us towards the path meant for us. For Sarkodie, it was music that beckoned him with its irresistible allure and he began to explore the art form.

According to him, his mother, Emma (Ewurama) Maame Aggrey, concerned about his future gave him a deadline of one year to prove himself in the music industry or return to his academic pursuit.
Recalling the pivotal moment, the musician who is currently on tour in North America revealed, “She acted just like a regular African parent… they care about your future; they think their decision is the best for you.”
Fate seemed to align with his musical aspirations, and the one-year window became a turning point in his life.
“So I was lucky she gave me one year to prove myself, and that was the same year that things started picking up. I was lucky. If it had skipped into the next year maybe I wouldn’t be sitting here with you,” Sarkodie acknowledged with gratitude.
