Police Commander shot in the head and neck battles for his life

Three suspects have been arrested and are assisting in police investigations

A District Police Commander in the Ashanti Region, ASP Dennis Boateng, has been shot in the neck and back of the head, leaving him in a critical condition, the police in the region have said.

Another police officer, G/Cpl. Samuel Achina as well as two Community Police Assistants and a driver of the Bosome Freho District Assembly who were ambushed together with the Commander on were also shot.

The Commander, who is currently battling for his life at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, was leading a team of nine police officers, 10 community police assistants and a BNI official to arrest a murder suspect when they were ambushed and shot at multiple times.

Police say the incident happened at about 11:30pm Saturday at the outskirts of Nsuta while the team was returning from Tufourkrom near Nsuta.

According to the Police, the team to effect the arrest of six suspects who butchered and killed a farmer, Moses Obodai, between Tumfuorkrom and Nsuta last Wednesday but met the absence of the suspects.

While returning to their base at Asiwa, they found a road block at the outskirt of Nsuta.

“Suddenly, a group of young men started firing guns indiscriminately at them,” the Police said.

The victims were rushed to the New Edubiase Government Hospital but ASP Boateng was referred to Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital while the others were treated and discharged.

The police officer was shot in the hand while the two community police assistants were shot in the head and hand. Driver of the DCE for Bosome Freho was also shot at the back of the head.

Meanwhile, three persons have been arrested in the shooting incident.

A 20-year-old Marcus Annan was arrested at the scene in possession of one single barrel gun with three AAA cartridges while Emmanuel Sekyere, 27 years and Emmanuel Appiah, 17 were arrested on the way.

They are currently in police custody assisting in investigations.

The District Chief Executive for Bosome Freho, Yaw Danso, told 3News that the police with the support of the community are on a manhunt to arrest three other suspects.
