The government has been commended by a group of Zongo youth at Asawase for the commitment in seeking justice for the unjust killing of seven of their colleagues by the police last year. The group, Progressive Zongo Youth of Asawase, says though the GH¢ 1.7 million compensation cannot bring back the lost lives, the package for the bereaved families is appreciable. President Nana Akufo-Addo announced the compensation package for the deceased at the Zongo for Peace and Development Conference held in Kumasi. Addressing a press conference in Kumasi, the group lauded initiatives by the government to ensure all the 1,080 Zongo communities are holistically developed. ‘The setting up of the Inner City and Zongo Development Ministry and Zongo Development Fund is the biggest show of love ever, by any government since independence towards the Zongo people. “We are confident that, in some few year all the 1080 Zongo communities in our country shall see real progress and development,” spokesperson for the group, Abdul Jalil Mohammed stated. He pledged the support of the youth in the area to assist the government to achieve the goal. “We shall contribute our quota to ensure that we attract the needed development. In doing so, we shall collaborate with whoever has Zongos at heart.” Abdul Jalil tasked the government to sustainably manage the Zongo development fund. “We urge the government to find a more sustainable formula for replenishing the Zo go Development Fund. Running the Fund on the annual budge estimates is only a drop in the ocean. We believe that, only a dedicated source of funding will ensure the long term sustainability of the Zongo Development Fund.” The group expressed its readiness to shun politics and religious inclinations in the interest of the development of Zongos.
