The streets of Yendi went agog with the unveiling of the new Ya-Naa on Jan. 18[/caption] There will no longer be a curfew in Yendi after the coronation of new Ya-Naa Abukari Mahama II, a government spokesperson has said. After Thursday night’s curfew, which ended on Friday morning, all and sundry – both Andanis and Abudus – can go about their businesses freely, the Minister of Information said. But that will not mean the immediate withdrawal of security from Yendi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah pointed out, nonetheless. He was speaking to TV3’s Komla Klutse on Friday ahead of the investiture of Ya-Naa Mahama II. The ceremony has attracted droves of people including past and present presidents of Ghana to the venue. Already, the surroundings of the Gbewaa Palace has been spruced up.
Yendi and its surroundings were subjected to a 5:00pm-to-7:00am curfew by government on Friday, January 18, when the Chief of Savelugu was named as the new overlord of Dagbon. A total ban was also put on the carrying of arms and ammunition in the town. But on Sunday, January 20, the curfew was relaxed from the previous 5:00pm to 7:00am to 6:00pm t 6:00am. According to the Minister of Interior, then, it was based on the advice of the Northern Regional Security Council. The ban on arms and ammunition was, however, still maintained. On Friday, when the new Ya-Naa will be outdoored, Mr Oppong Nkrumah said technically the curfew had ended. He reiterated the Akufo-Addo-led government’s resolve to reward the people of Yendi with development. The first will be a $30 million-water supply project in the area.
