Raila Odinga was sworn in by one of the NASA MPs[/caption] Kenyan opposition leader Raila Amolo Odinga took an oath on Tuesday at the Uhuru Park in Nairobi to swear in as the ‘People’s President’. The oath was administered by one of National Super Alliance (NASA) Members of Parliament, TJ Kajwang. It is unclear what the motive of NASA is by this swearing-in but the General Manager of Media General News, Joseph Warungu, said it may be a subtle move to unsettle the Uhuru Kenyatta-led government and trigger some form of roundtable negotiations, possibly a power-sharing deal. ‘Unprecedented’ Speaking on 3FM‘s Midday News on Tuesday, Mr Warungu said the event has completely caught everyone by surprise. Though he described the less-than-10-minute swearing-in as unprecedented, Mr Warungu said a similar occurrence was witnessed in the East African nation in 1982. A Senior Private in the Kenya Airforce, Hezekiah Ochuka, managed to rule alongside then leader, David Arap Moi, albeit for six hours. The event on Tuesday had no police officers as Mr Warungu was convinced it would have turned bloody given the clashes between NASA supporters and the officers. Kenya’s Supreme Court had annulled the August 8 elections, citing several irregularities. But the re-run in October, 2017 was boycotted by the NASA leader. President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared winner by 98 per cent though the polls recorded a 39 per cent turnout.
