President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will chair an emergency Ecowas summit today, Wednesday, September 8, at 2:00pm as Chair of the West African bloc to address current events in member state Guinea.

Announcing this to journalists at a media briefing on Tuesday, September 7, Director of Communications at the Presidency Eugene Arhin pointed out that the summit will be virtual.

“On the matter that has also dominated the world of news especially from this weekend that has to do with the ousting of the President of Guinea, HE Alpha Condé, the president tomorrow at 2:00pm would chair a virtual emergency summit of heads of state and government of the Economic Community of West African States basically to reaffirm the long-held belief that the ballots and not the bullets should be the only legitimate means of effecting change in the political leadership of any country within the ECOWAS community.

“As you already know, prior to this particular summit as chairperson of the Ecowas Authority, he issued a statement to condemn unreservedly the events in Guinea, has demanded for the respect or physical safety of President Alpha Conde as well as his immediate and unconditional release.”

The Guinean leader was ousted in a bloodless coup d’etat on Sunday, September 5.

The subversion of Alpha Condé’s government was by special forces under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Mamady Doumbouya.
