Head of Security at Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) Major (rtd) Lawrence Appiah has warned the public against any acts that seek to undermine the progress of the country.
He has particularly warned that he and his men will not hesitate to defy their security rules of engagement by killing anyone who attempts to burn pipelines belonging to Cirrus Oil Services Limited in Tema, an enclave within which GRIDCo and VRA also operates.
It had emerged Monday, April 8 that some unidentified persons attempted to burn pipelines belonging to the Volta River Authority (VRA), but upon inspection Tuesday, the retired army major confirmed that the pipelines neither belong to VRA nor GRIDCo, though it is an ongoing project for Cirrus Oil Services Limited.
“We have rules of engagement, but we will not hesitate to shoot and to kill because Ghana must succeed,” he cautioned.
He explained that if the people had succeeded in setting the pipelines ablaze, it would have affected the power supply because GRIDCo and VRA are also within that enclave, and that would have “affected every economic activity,” he added.
A similar incident occurred about two weeks ago when one of GRIDCo’s pylons at Tema, along the Volta Smelter transmission site, collapsed after thieves vandalised the bolts and nuts.
In what the Energy Minister described as an act of vandalism, the incident was said to have been perpetrated by people who were said not to be interested in seeing progress in Ghana and want to plunge the country into darkness.
Major (rtd) Appiah also shared in the opinion of the Minister and has warned that the perpetrators desist from those acts of sabotage.
