W/R: Railway Co. extends free passenger service

Patronage of train service between Takoradi and Tarkwa has increased after just three days of the commissioning of service. A Train Guard, Samuel Anguh, has told 3news.com that on Tuesday when the Ghana Railway Company Limited commenced passenger service, they recorded a total of 191 people. On Thursday, a total 206 passengers joined the train. On Friday, the trains were full to capacity with some passengers sitting on the floor of the coaches. “Where you are sitting is the first class and you can attest to yourself that it is full. Look at the end of the coach and you will see people sitting on the floor,” Mr Anguh told 3news.com’s report. “The other classes are all full. When I checked we had recorded 342 passengers on board.” There was good news on Friday as the Ghana Railways Company Limited announced it has extended the free passenger service for another five working days. This comes a day after a disruption to the service as one coach suffered a “minor” challenge at Nsuta in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region. Deputy Manager Director of the company Michael Adjei Anyetei in a statement said as a result of the public enthusiasm shown during the maiden free passenger service on Tuesday and Thursday, management has decided to extend the free passenger service for an extra one week, starting from Monday, February 3, 2020. “The train as usual will depart from Takoradi Station to Tarkwa at 6:15am and depart from Tarkwa Station to Takoradi at 3:00pm each day”.
