Voting is underway in six constituencies of the opposition New Patriotic Party to elect parliamentary candidates for the 2016 elections.

The primaries, majority of which have taken place last month, are yet to be completed due to internal party disagreements some of which have landed in court.

The primaries on Saturday July 25, was to take place in eight constituencies which had been cleared by the party’s appeals committee.

However in the Kwesimintsim constituency in the Western Region, an injunction has been placed on the process by some disgruntled persons bringing the process to a halt.

Also in the Korle Klottey in the Greater Accra Region, Philip Addison, one of the lead contenders, is demanding the disqualification of his main contender, Nii Noi Nortey, a former constituency chairman.

As a result, there  is an application for injunction on the elections following a writ by six party supporters led by Mr. Addison.

The plaintiffs want the court to, among others, declare Nii Noi Nortey unfit to contest the crucial polls because they claim he presented a fake certificate to the vetting committee of the party.

This means only six of the constituencies are voting today.

They are Tema West and Central in the Greater Accra Region; Obom-Domeabra in the Central Region; Kintampo North in the Brong Ahafo Region; Juaben in the Ashanti Region and a run-off in Gomoa East in the Central Region.

The hotbed of activity on Saturday will be at the Tema West Constituency, where incumbent Irene Naa Torshie Addo is being challenged by Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah and Adwoa Amoako.

The candidates have agreed to hold the primary at a neutral ground, Adjei Kojo School for the Deaf, after a decision on a venue nearly created trouble.

TV3’s Josephine Frimpong in Tema says voting in Tema West is ongoing peacefully but amidst tight security.

But in the Kwesimintsim Constituency in the Western Region, delegates are reported to have gathered with the hope that the election will come off despite the elections.

TV3’s Western Regional Correspondent, Eric Adjei, says security has been tightened in the area as delegates have gathered at a venue and are being addressed by constituency executives.

The Okai Kwei South constituency in the Greater Accra Region together with a few others will hold their primaries later due to some legal issues.
