Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining Charles Bissue has been indicted in the latest exposé of investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas in which Mr. Bissue is seen accepting money to fast track some documents. In the investigative piece, which sought to bring to light some persons shortchanging government on the fight against illegal mining, Mr. Bissue is seen helping fast-track documents without due diligence to allow a mining company begin operations “So please fast track this, include that of the EPA and all of that,” Mr. Bissue was caught on tape telling one of his guys. Mr. Bissue is not alone! Some police and military officers, who are members of the anti-galamsey taskforce responsible for ensuring that people do not mine illegally, are also seen being compromised as they receive money to protect illegal miners, contrary to their duties. In March 2017, President Akufo-Addo inaugurated the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining(IMCIM) to come up with a roadmap to ensure that activities of small-scale miners are well regulated in order to prevent people from mining illegally across the country. This was part of measures government put in place to deal with the menace of illegal mining in the country in order to protect the country’s water bodies. Following the inauguration of the Committee, a secretariat headed by Charles Bissue was established. It is, however, evident in Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ exposé that the very people put in charge of ensuring that the issue of galamsey is dealt with, are compromised and are allowing the menace to go on despite the President’s call for these activities to be halted.
