The Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has said that the vetting of the Chief Justice Nominee Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo will focus on her rulings since she went to the Supreme Court last year.
Dr Forson said the Minority wanted to screen her, especially on the apex court’s order to Parliament to remove the name of Assin North Member of Parliament James Gyakye Quayson from the records but they do not have the written judgment.
Dr Forson indicated they wanted copies of that particular judgment to be able to ask her questions on it but they did not have it as of the time of vetting on Friday, May 26.
“We will be focusing on her judgment on her running from the time she went to the Supreme court,” the Ajumako Enyan Essiam lawmaker said during the Appointments Committee sitting on Friday to screen the nominee.
She was nominated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in April.
According to the President, her nomination was to avoid any vacuum that would occur following the retirement of the Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, who retired on Wednesday, May 24.
Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who hails from Winneba in the Central Region, if approved, will become the third female Chief Justice in the history of Ghana, after Justices Georgina Theodora Wood and Sophia Akuffo.
President Akufo-Addo had earlier urged the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to quickly facilitate the approval of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo for the position of Chief Justice.
