Verna Changing Lives Campaign eases burdens for 69-year-old market cleaner with GHC 5,000 support

The impactful “Verna Changing Lives” campaign, led by Verna Purified Drinking Water under the Twellium Foundation, has once again stepped in to address the plight of a vulnerable individual on the streets of Accra.

In the latest installment of the “Accra Turning Point” edition, the campaign has come to the aid of Salomey Kwaakye, a 69-year-old woman whose dreams had been nearly shattered by poverty, which forced her to abandon her education.

Salomey Kwaakye was a bright student and enrolled in nursing training but the financial burden ended her pursuit of higher education. As life took its toll, she fell ill and resorted to cleaning markets to provide for her family.

Her journey began in 1994 when she started cleaning the Agbogbloshie market, and later moved to the Makola market after a kind-hearted lady named Evelyn decided to support her family and sponsor her daughter’s education.

For the past 30 years, Salomey has been cleaning the markets, sustaining herself on the meager support from traders and the benevolence of the lady who took up the schooling costs for her child.

In an effort to improve her circumstances, Salomey enrolled in a training course for soap and powder production. She plans to use the funds provided by Verna to support the production and distribution of her products, with the assistance of her children. She also aims to secure a place for her family to live.

Notably, Salomey’s husband abandoned the family when she and her child fell ill simultaneously shortly after their marriage. She is now a mother to one daughter and four grandchildren.

As part of their commitment to improving the lives of those most vulnerable on Accra’s streets, Verna has granted Salomey Kwaakye GHC 5,000 to help her overcome her struggles and enhance her living conditions.

This benevolent gesture marks the 10th act of kindness within the ongoing “Verna Changing Lives” campaign, with nine previous beneficiaries receiving their share of GHC 5,000 each to alleviate their challenges.

Verna’s dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of the city’s vulnerable population continues to be broadcasted through 3 FM 92.7 MHz. The 12-week campaign remains steadfast in its mission to improve the lives of those in need.
