The 2020 Afrobarometer report released by the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD), has stated that unemployment and education remain the topmost issues among the youth in Ghana.

Afrobarometer is a pan-African, nonpartisan survey research network that provides reliable data on African experiences and evaluations of democracy, governance, and quality of life.

The report which was released on Wednesday August 12, a day set aside to mark the International Youth Day stated some five key findings from a survey conducted in 2019.

According to the report “in Ghana, where 57% of the population is less than 25 years old (Index Mundi, 2019), unemployment and exclusion from democratic processes and decision-making are blamed for leaving youth vulnerable to manipulation by political parties

Among the findings is what the report said is the failure of successive governments to find a lasting solution to the unemployment and a decline in youth participation in democratic activities and decision making.

The report stated that “after 14-years of interventions by successive governments, challenges and unfulfilled opportunities persist for Ghanaian youth. “

Interventions like the National Youth Employment Agency in 2018, Ghana Youth Employment Development Agency, (GYEDA) now National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP), the Government Youth Policy, have all been implemented in a bid to curb this situation but challenges and unfulfilled opportunities persist for Ghanaian youth, the report stated.
