U/W: FDA destroys GHȻ41K worth of expired products

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has set ablaze some seized products worth GHȻ41,027 in the Upper West Region. The items some of which are expired were seized from the market between January and December 2018. The Food and Drugs Authority which has the mandate of ensuring public health and safety conducted a post market surveillance to ensure products sold in the market are safe. During the period, they seized various expired and unwholesome products including biscuits alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages, toffees, milk, canned tomatoes, canned fish, and many others items. Some retailers and shop owners also took the expired products to the FDA themselves to be properly disposed off. Upper West Regional Head of the Food and Drugs Authority Albert Ankomah explained why there is the need for companies not to dispose expired products on their own but rather bring to the Authority. “Per our laws, when you are found doing that, you will be sanctioned “Additionally, if FDA destroy the products or supervises the destruction of your product, there is an evidence that those products were not sold, and so when you go to the GRA they can assist you to sort of reduce or give you a rebate of the tax paid because those products were not sold,” he explained. He called on all retailers, wholesalers and distributors to always endeavor to present expired and unwholesome products to the Authority for proper disposal for appropriate certification.
