The people were being trained as bodyguards for the New Patriotic Party’s presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo, and his running mate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Deputy Communications Director of the NPP, Perry Okudzeto has said.
A 54-year-old Major Ahmed Shaik Hazis (Rtd.), 39-year–old WO/ Denver Dwayhe Naidu (Rtd.) and 45-year-old Captain Mlungiseleli Jokani (Rtd.), were picked up on Sunday March 20, 2016 at El Capitano Hotel in Agona Duakwa in the Central Region.
“The trio, all ex-police officers were engaged in training fifteen young men in various military drills, including unarmed combat, weapon handling, VIP protection techniques and rapid response maneuvers,” according to a Bureau of National Investigations document.
But Perry Okudzeto told Joy News Tuesday that the three were doing “nothing untoward” as being “twisted” by the BNI.
He described the approach by the security agency and the subsequent media reports as “very irresponsible”.
He conceded that the about 16 people were being trained by Delta Security on crowd control.
“We are training our security people, who are engaged in crowd control due to the increasing popularity of our candidate and his running mate,” he opened up.
“Not training them on how to use arms, not training them in any combative exercise or military tactics or anything,” he pointed out.
He said the three ex-police officers are known in South Africa as being influential in the security details of that country’s former Presidents Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki.
He said the NPP is trying to understand from the security agency what the “real issues are; then we will advise ourselves on the next step”.
