Political scientist and senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has described as ‘political high-handedness’ how the state treated former police officer, ACP Benjamin Agordzo, over the treason trial.

The Accra High Court on Wednesday, January 24, acquitted and discharged Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dr. Benjamin Agordzo and two others in the treason trial that began in 2019.

The three were not found “guilty of abetment to commit High Treason.”

Speaking on The Key Points on TV3, Professor Gyampo said, “On this particular case and with specific reference to Dr. Agordzo, I think that there was a certain level of political high-handedness in handling the matter,” he said, indicating that “In Ghana, leadership prefers to have people gossip about systems without being open about systems.”

Professor Gyampo, however, noted that he does not support the idea of people planning to ‘kill the state’ through coup detats because a coup is not the way to go about mitigating the hardships in a country.

“Everybody knows that I do not like coups, military interventions, or whatever is done to kill the state…coup detat simply means killing the state, and so I do not like it.

“I want the state to be able to continue to exist, to be strong, and to deliver on its mandates, so I do not like coups, and so I support every move that is put in place to ensure that the constitution of the land is not usurped and coups do not become the means of being about change,” he emphasised.
