Traders and shop owners of the Tema Central Market are demonstrating against the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) for what they describe as astronomical increases in property rates.

According to them, the previous rate of GH¢50 per shop owner has been increased to GH¢260.

They are, therefore, clad in red and have closed their shops to register their dissatisfaction.

The police were on hand to ensure security

Among the placards carried by the demonstrators read: “We will pay 30% MCE not 50%”, “Property rate 202% increase Why, why??” and “Store rent increase too much”.

The demonstration is directed at the MCE

But the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Ashi Odamtten, told TV3’s Josephine Frempong that there was a wide range of consultation with the traders and shop owners before the current rates were agreed upon.

He said the traders were engaged on two different occasions.

As a result, their demands for 30 per cent rather comes as a surprise to him and it is not realistic.
